Buying property in Portugal often begins with an exciting vision: sunshine, sea views, terraced streets, village squares, golf resorts, renovated townhouses, traditional farmhouses and the promise of a different pace of life.

However, turning that vision into the right purchase requires experience, careful research and honest guidance.

Which areas hold their value? Is the asking price realistic? What paperwork should be checked before making an offer? Who is representing the buyer? What happens if a property has planning concerns, access issues, condominium restrictions or unclear boundaries?

These are the questions that show why an experienced buyer’s agent in Portugal is so important. They are also the areas in which Andy has consistently demonstrated his knowledge, dedication and commitment to protecting our clients.

Algarve House Hunters is pleased to welcome Andy Knight into his new role as Managing Director. We are delighted to have him help leading the team and wish him every success in this exciting new chapter. We look forward to the future of Algarve House Hunters under his leadership.

The Portuguese property market can be hard to read from the outside

Portugal is a popular place to buy, but finding the right property is not always as simple as searching online.

Idealista is one of the best and most reliable property portals for buyers to start their search, but it does not show everything that is available. Not all sellers choose to advertise there, and not every agency lists all of its properties on Idealista, partly because portal advertising comes at a cost.

Online listings can also be misleading. The same property may appear several times, prices and information can vary, and photos do not always tell the full story about location, access, parking or condition.

At Algarve House Hunters, we search both online and offline, presenting suitable properties from across the market rather than limiting clients to one agency's listings.

We also have access to a growing number of secret and off-market listings, with new opportunities being added every week.

This proves that.... Not every property in Portugal is advertised online…

One of the biggest advantages of using a buyer’s agent is having access to properties you simply won’t find by searching the usual property portals.

At Algarve House Hunters, we search across the market both online and offline and our network of secret and off-market properties continues to grow every week.

But don’t just take our word for it. These are genuine comments from our clients:

Cianna Millan — June 2026

“They showed us a great selection of properties, including some fantastic secret listings that weren't even available online.”

Cianna also specifically thanked Rebecca, Andy and Luchia for their hard work, patience, support and dedication.

Rachel Lucas — June 2026

“Luchia found our home within a few hours of us making contact.”

Rachel explains that the property was a secret/off-market property, with the vendor choosing not to advertise publicly. They hadn't even completed the forms — they had simply spoken to Luchia about what they were looking for. She then arranged a viewing of their new home the very next day.

This is exactly why we believe a buyer’s agent can make such a difference.

Our role is to help clients access as much of the market as possible and understand what lies beyond the online listings before making one of the biggest decisions of their lives.

A buyer’s agent helps turn scattered information into a clear picture. That includes:

  • Comparing asking prices with the reality of the area

  • Spotting red flags before a viewing becomes emotional

  • Understanding which locations match the buyer’s lifestyle

  • Helping the buyer avoid wasted trips

  • Asking direct questions early, before an offer is made

The Portuguese buying process itself is also different from what some international buyers expect. After an offer is accepted, buyers normally work with legal representatives to check documentation and prepare the promissory contract. A deposit is usually paid at that stage, followed later by completion at deed. The detail matters, and buyers should always take qualified legal advice.

Thinking of saving time, protecting yourself and having someone genuinely on your side when buying in Portugal?

Maybe you’re considering using a buyer’s agent but aren’t sure whether it’s right for you.

If you are, we would genuinely love to hear from you. And if you’re still unsure whether a buyer’s agent is right for you, take a look at our 5-star Google reviews and see what our clients say about their experience with us.

We’ve been doing this for years, and for us, it has always been about much more than finding a property and making a sale. We really do put our clients’ best interests first.

Sometimes that means telling a client that we don’t think a property is right for them. We will walk away from properties when something isn’t legal, when there are concerns that need investigating, or when we simply feel it may not be the right choice for them in the future.

We would much rather lose a sale than see one of our clients make a decision they might regret.

Buying a home in Portugal is a huge decision, and we want our clients to feel that they have someone genuinely on their side — someone who will tell them the truth, even when it isn’t what they hoped to hear.

If you’re thinking about buying in Portugal, get in touch. We’re here to help.
